WRITE TIME

It's "WRITE TIME," so dig into your well-stocked toolbox and build a poem that says "YOU."

Each week on Wednesday I will give you a poetry writing "prompt." A prompt is basically words to help you get your poem started. Read the prompt carefully and completely. Look for words that attract your attention. This key word just might ignite your spark of creativity.
===========================================================
PROMPT #1: Write a poem about a person you admire. Your subject can be a historical figure or someone you know.

I will meet you back here next Wednesday, 3/5/14 on Let's Talk Poetry, to share with you what I've been inspired to create.

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME AT ANYTIME BY SENDING AN EMAIL. THERE IS NO OBLIGATION TO SHARE YOUR POEM OR YOUR THOUGHTS.

THE POET'S TOOLBOX

In any profession, having the right tools to work with makes the difference between doing a good job or a not so good job. It's hard to create or repair anything without the right tools. So like any other craftsmen, the poet must have a well-stocked toolbox.

The poet's toolbox will not contain hammers or nails, but an assortment of writing materials: pen, pencil, notebook/journal, laptop, tablet, digital recorder, something to write or record on.

This toolbox will also contain words, imagination, and ideas for how to make a poem live and breathe. These three (3) elements are the building blocks of all good poetry writing. Before you begin writing it is important to develop ideas to write about. A poem often expresses ideas in language that does not sound like everyday speech.

So make good use of your toolbox, and fill your notebook/journal and other devices with words, word images, phrases, sentences,  and fragments of sentences, always exploring the possibilities of words, capturing ideas, and continuously keeping an eye out for possible poems.
"POEM IDEAS ARE EVERYWHERE. YOU HAVE TO LISTEN AND WATCH FOR THEM.    -Patricia Hubbell-

WHAT ARE POEMS MADE OF?

POEMS are made of words. WORDS capture us. WORDS provoke and excite us. WORDS absorb the thrust of our emotions and push back at us. WORDS make pictures in the mind. WORDS take on the shape of new ideas . WORDS, by their nature, lead and guide us.

WHAT IS POETRY?

POETRY IS a language which tells us through a more or less emotional reaction, something that cannot be said.    -Edward A. Robinson-

POETRY IS a "game of knowledge," a bringing to consciousness, by naming them, of emotions and their hidden relationships.     -unknown-

POETRY IS not the thing said but a way of saying it.    -A.E. Housman-

CREATIVITY

The creative process is an encounter between the POET and the world. How these two poles interact (OBJECTIVE-WORLD and SUBJECTIVE-POET) is an inescapable mystery. But this interaction becomes a channel (ZONE) for CREATIVITY to express itself.

COMMUNICATION

"The poet uses words as a means to an end, but that end is not simply the poem. The end is the impact the poem has on the writer and his or her audience. That audience may be a single friend, a nation, or just the poet. We write poetry to make our individual ideas heard. When we succeed, when we create a poem that serves as a bridge towards understanding, that is COMMUNICATION"        - Sara Holbrook-
