SHARING MY WORKSHOP EXPERIENCE

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
In the weekend workshop PROMPTS FOR POETS, which I attended at Poets House in New York on 7/26 & 7/27 (see "Live Blog" posts on this site for those dates). The participants were given the following prompt:

PROMPT- Select a poem in a foreign language and translate it in English.

Among the choices on the table, I selected the following poem:

It was written by the 9th century Chinese poet/hermit HANSHAN, who called himself Cold Mountain, or Cold Cliff.

My effort:

A poem by Hanshan (Cold Mountain)
Translated by the Poet Outlaw

the atmosphere
up high is

where the
snow drifts

takes away
your breath

freezes on
contact with
thin air where
swirling circles

of elevated clouds
float by and
birds of prey
are the

only things
that dare
to stand
on cold mountain

PROMPT 20 - THE EFFORT

..................................................................................
AT THE END

just give me
one more moment
to hold
the love of my life near
to dry all
the eyes of sad
goodbyes and fear
not really knowing
if in the end
with my last breath
my last footsteps
on this unknown journey
if i will even care

ELEMENTS OF POETRY

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Metaphor- A comparison that likens two different things by identifying one as the other.  Ex: "all the world's a stage."

Simile- A comparison likening one thing to another by the use of like, as, such as, how, etc.  Ex: tears flowed like wine.

The last chance to experience the 22nd Annual Poets House Showcase will be on Saturday, 8/16. It will be viewed during regular library hours.

Take it from The Poet Outlaw: You will enjoy the exhibit. It is the go-to event for poets, publishers, and literary lovers to discover what's new in the world of poetry.

Unfortunately, I did not get to attend The Showcase Reading Series, which featured leading and emerging poets reciting their works and that of others.

However, during my visit  to the exhibit on July 26, I arrived early, and before anyone else had gotten there,The Poet Outlaw stepped to the podium, got on the mic, and recited Margaret Atwood's masterful poem, This Is A Photograph Of Me, from her book, "The Circle Game," which was on the showcase shelf. My only audience was the spirit of all those poets and people who were previously present in that room.

For a glimpse of The Showcase, see my "LIVE BLOG" post of July 28th.

This is a photograph of me reciting:

THE BIG SCHEME

creation
the master plan
a study in symbiosis
where all need and feed
off each other
and begin to know
their purpose in
the big scheme of
life
a timepiece whose
alarm is internal
springing into action
to do their part
like rosebuds blooming
in spring
it is what they
were created to do
in the beginning
